Why consider orthodontic treatment?
An attractive smile is actually a secondary result of orthodontic treatment. The primary reason for aligning teeth and jaws is that it may minimize or prevent future oral health problems.

Misaligned teeth and jaws can cause abnormal wear of tooth surfaces as well as excessive “wear and tear” on the jaw joints (TMJ) and gum tissue. Injury and decay are also more likely to occur if orthodontic problems go untreated.

Straight teeth allow for better biting, chewing and balanced jaw function. Straight teeth also facilitate better dental hygiene, and healthier teeth and gums. Lastly, straight teeth improve your dental health and therefore your overall health.

When should I schedule my first visit?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an orthodontic screening by age seven. Only a few orthodontic problems need to be addressed at such a young age but an early exam will allow the orthodontist to advise you as to when the appropriate age to begin treatment would be.

What happens at the first visit?
At the first visit, or orthodontic consultation, an initial exam is completed. The orthodontist will address any questions or concerns you may have, and will answer the big three questions everyone has:

1) Does your child need braces?
2) If so, when?
3) How much will it cost?

Should I still see my pediatric/general dentist while wearing braces?
Yes, regular checkups are very important while in braces. Your dentist may recommend more frequent cleaning appointments during orthodontic treatment.

How often are orthodontic appointments scheduled?
On average patients are seen once every 6-8 weeks. This may vary depending on current stage of treatment.

Can all appointments be scheduled after school hours?
In general, all long visits such as putting braces on or taking braces off are done in the morning or the early afternoon. In this way, we can give the necessary attention that each procedure requires. “Regular” adjustment visits are 15-minute appointments and scheduled in the afternoon. Please understand that it is our desire to treat EVERY patient as fully and completely as possible at each visit. Morning appointments allow us to accomplish this.

Can I continue to play sports?
Yes, but we do recommend a mouthguard be worn at all times to protect your teeth from injury.

Where can I learn more about orthodontics and taking care of my teeth?
